William Whitelaw enters the transfer portal

After only one season with the Michigan hockey team, it has been reported via Mark Divver on X that sophomore forward William Whitelaw has entered the transfer portal.

Originally a transfer from Wisconsin, Whitelaw came to Michigan with 17 points in his freshman season with the Badgers. And prior to his time in Wisconsin, he was drafted to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Whitelaw jumpstarted the season with a goal in his Wolverines debut against Minnesota State, but then struggled to find the back of the net for two months. In that dry spell, he also struggled to contribute on goals, tallying just two assists. But once he scored his breakthrough goal at Penn State in November, his production on the stat sheet increased. He also became a crucial member of Michigan’s special teams as a member of both the first and second power-play units, whichever one he was needed on.

His time as a Wolverine did not see much more production than when he was at Wisconsin. Tallying 18 points with 11 goals and seven assists, Whitelaw was sixth in Michigan’s point production, making him a hard loss for the Wolverines’ forward lines.

With Whitelaw entering the portal, he is the second Michigan skater to do so since it opened. As Wolverines coach Brandon Naurato looks to fill the gaps left by his graduates and transfers, he will need to look to the portal and at his incoming freshmen to make up for the significant production he has already lost thus far.
