Just days after defenseman Ethan Edwards signed an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils, the Michigan hockey team has lost another player to the NHL ranks.
Wednesday the Vegas Golden Knights announced they signed forward Jackson Hallum to a two-year entry-level contract. Hallum was Vegas’ third-round and 91st overall selection in the 2020 NHL Draft.
Across 84 games, Hallum proved to be an important part of the Wolverines’ lineup, earning 42 points in his career. As one of the fastest players on the ice, he used his speed to blow by defenders and get to the net and threaten to score.
Hallum impressed in his freshman season, earning 17 points in 39 appearances. He established himself as a part of the future core and was seen as an important piece moving forward. Although Hallum’s sophomore season ended early due to an injury, his positive presence was a large part of still a critical part of Michigan’s identity.
As a junior this past season, Hallum started the season strong, including a hat trick against Boston University. However, his production slowed down toward the end of the season, leaving the Wolverines with an increased need for production. He finished the year with 17 points, ranking seventh on the roster.
Without Hallum, Michigan coach Brandon Naurato will have to grapple with the loss of another experienced skater and locker room presence. Alongside the recent departure of forward William Whitelaw, Hallum’s void creates another gap in an already-thin lineup, which the Wolverines will have to fill with newcomers.
As Hallum moves onto the NHL, he gets a new start in the world’s most premier league. Meanwhile, Michigan will grapple with his exit, forced to fill a new hole.
