Will Felicio leaves Michigan, enters transfer portal

After an early end to the season saw the Michigan hockey team miss the NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines lost its first player to the transfer portal. First reported Tuesday by Brad Elliott Schlossman, freshman defenseman Will Felicio has left Michigan.

At first, Felicio struggled to find playing time behind established defenseman. With injuries piling up, though, Felicio began to play more. In 25 appearances, he scored two goals and nine assists, with seven of those points coming in just a four-game stretch.

As just a freshman and in limited appearances, Felicio flashed potential as an offensive threat, as his 11-point total was the fourth-highest figure for the Wolverines’ defensemen. With departures including defensemen Jacob Truscott and Ethan Edwards, Felicio figured to be a significant portion of Michigan coach Brandon Naurato’s rotation for next season.

However, Naurato no longer has that luxury. Instead, he has just three returning defensemen to work with. In Felicio’s absence, Michigan will likely need to add experienced transfers to pair with its returners and incoming freshman class.

But in the ensuing time, the Wolverines are now left without a potential cornerstone of its defensive core, while Felicio waits for offers to join a new team.
