Tre Donaldson departs from Michigan through transfer portal

Spending two years at Auburn, then this past season with the Michigan men’s basketball team, junior guard Tre Donaldson has again entered the transfer portal after only one season with the Wolverines.

First reported by On3‘s Jamie Shaw in a post on X, Donaldson becomes the fourth Michigan player to enter the transfer portal so far this offseason. The news comes one day after guard Elliot Cadeau committed to transfer from North Carolina to Michigan, as both Donaldson and Cadeau have served as point guards over the course of their respective careers.

Donaldson started his collegiate career with the Tigers for two seasons where he made 10 starts in 67 games, averaging over 40% from deep in both seasons. He made progress from his freshman to sophomore year, increasing his points and assists per game from 2.5 to 6.7 and 1.2 to 3.4, respectively.

In his junior season at Michigan, Donaldson played in and started all 37 games and was the primary ball handler throughout the year. He had his best season statistically with 11.6 points and 4.1 assists per game on 43.3% shooting from the field and 37.5% from behind the arc. Donaldson’s season was also ended by his former team, Auburn, in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Donaldson was often looked to in clutch moments throughout the season, but most notably in the postseason with crucial 3-pointers late in games, and a game-winning shot in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Maryland.

Beyond just his play, Donaldson was also often looked to as a leader on the Wolverines’ roster. He exuded confidence through both his play and communication

With the addition of Cadeau to the roster on Monday, Donaldson was put in a position to decide whether to compete for the point guard position, or take his talents elsewhere. And after only one year in Ann Arbor, Donaldson has decided to find somewhere new to call home for his senior season.
