After only one season with the Michigan men’s basketball team, sophomore forward Sam Walters entered the transfer portal on Monday afternoon, as reported by 247 Sports.
While Walters’ decision comes just three days after the Wolverines were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Auburn, and Walters hadn’t suited up for Michigan since Feb. 8. Due to sustaining a lower back injury, Walters wasn’t with the Wolverines during March Madness or the Big Ten Tournament.
When healthy, Walters was a contributor off Michigan’s bench, averaging five points per game across 23 games. His 36.6% mark from behind the arc made him primarily a 3-point threat, helping space the floor for the Wolverines.
His decision to enter the transfer portal comes less than a year after his commitment to Michigan, which happened on April 22. He decided to leave Alabama and join the Wolverines after the hiring of coach Dusty May, one of six transfers on an overhauled roster.
Before joining the Crimson Tide, Walters was a top-100 recruit nationally coming out of high school. His pedigree suggested that he has the talent to heighten his usage and production, which were nearly identical at Alabama and Michigan.
In each of his two seasons in college basketball, Walters averaged just over 12 minutes per game and attempted around four shots per contest. While looking for his third school in three years, Walters is likely hoping to find a landing pad that gives him an uptick in both those numbers.
Coming just minutes after Michigan picked up its first commitment out of the portal — North Carolina guard Elliot Cadeau — the mayhem of the transfer portal is in full effect in Ann Arbor, as May attempts to construct a new roster for year two. Walters in particular marks the first player May recruited to the Wolverines that has decided to leave through the portal.
