Break Point

The Michigan Daily Sunday Crossword

SUNDAY PUZZLEHello everyone! I am so excited to be publishing another Sunday puzzle, my first of the semester! This may or may not be my last Sunday crossword for the Michigan Daily, time will tell. If these are my last constructor notes, I would be remiss to not say thank you to each and every one of you who solve my crosswords. The Games team has a lot of exciting things in the works, keep your eyes peeled! Feel free to let me know any thoughts or issues with this puzzle by reaching out to me at maemarsh@umich.edu. For general questions and concerns, reach out to crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!

Tricky Clues:

17A. “String before W” leads to the answer STUV. This may only be considered to be on the trickier side by those who have to sing the alphabet (as I do). I feel like I have seen clues and entries pretty similar to this in some other puzzles, which may make this a bit easier to solve than it would be otherwise.

23A. The clue, “One way to be sick”, refers to ASADOG. I am going to be vulnerable with you all, I have never really understood this expression. Nevertheless, my roommates say it pretty frequently, so it is fitting it worked its way into this puzzle.

62A. “2014 Olympics city” is SOCHI. I have fond memories of playing Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games on my DS growing up, so I was really excited to be able to include this as part of the grid.

49D. ARIADNE is the answer to the clue, “Daughter of King Minos.” While my preferred mythology growing up was Egyptian, I deeply appreciate any references made to Greek mythology as well.

Today’s Theme:

As a washed up former tennis player (first doubles in highschool, slight flex), it is pretty much the main sport I follow. I actually started tinkering with this grid last year, but the theme revealer at 57-Across, or AUSTRALIANOPEN, had already concluded. Aryna Sabalenka, the current WTA No. 1, had won the women’s singles championship, and “The men’s 2024 champion of 57A-” was JANNIKSINNER, the answer to 25-Across. 49-Across, or “First men’s tennis player to reach 10 consecutive Grand Slam singles finals” refers to ROGERFEDERER, arguably one of the most well-known Swiss. Finally, the “Winner of the most Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era,” and the answer to 20-Across is SERENAWILLIAMS.
