After playing just ten games in the Michigan hockey team sweater, graduate defenseman Tim Lovell has left the University of Michigan.
Following a post via Mark Divver on X speculating graduate defenseman Tim Lovell’s status with the sixth-ranked Wolverines, a Michigan spokesperson confirmed with The Michigan Daily that Lovell departed from the University and therefore, the Wolverines hockey team.
In this past offseason, Michigan picked up Lovell in the transfer portal for his graduate season. Lovell spent his freshman season with Boston College before playing the rest of his undergraduate career with Arizona State. As a Sun Devil, Lovell tallied 77 points over three seasons, 37 of those coming during his senior season. Additionally, Lovell was a Hobey Baker Award nominee for that 37-point campaign.
His Wolverines career never picked up speed to the caliber of his time with Arizona State. Across ten games, Lovell only had two assists — both against his alma mater. Lovell’s physicality brought a new element to Michigan’s blue line that was missing prior. However, he could not produce on the stat sheet beyond that single weekend in Arizona.
In last weekend’s sweep over Penn State and Friday’s game against Western Michigan, Lovell was listed as a non-dresser. Against the Nittany Lions, freshman defenseman Will Felicio filled the gap, even tallying an assist. With two points across five games, Felicio will likely take Lovell’s place.
With Lovell’s departure from the University, there is a veteran hole in Michigan’s defensive lineup. As a result, Wolverines coach Brandon Naurato will need to make some mid-season adjustments to fill that hole.
