Jack Tuttle announces medical retirement from football

Michigan graduate quarterback Jack Tuttle announced his retirement from football Monday night, citing medical reasons. He was unavailable against Michigan State this past weekend due to an at-the-time undisclosed injury, and in a statement posted to Instagram, he revealed he was diagnosed with a concussion.

Suffering the fifth concussion of his career last week, combined with an injury to his throwing arm this offseason, Tuttle made the decision to prioritize his health by stepping away from football.

“This past year has been challenging, marked by a UCL repair in my throwing arm that I didn’t fully recover from, which has caused ongoing issues,” Tuttle said in his statement. “And unfortunately, the recent experience of enduring my fifth concussion has brought forth the painful truth: that I need to start prioritizing my health. Throughout my college career, I’ve battled numerous injuries, culminating in the difficult choice to step away from playing the game that I love.”

Tuttle’s seven-year collegiate career has been riddled with injuries. During his time at Indiana, he dealt with a foot injury in 2021 and a season-ending shoulder injury in 2022. Transferring to the Wolverines prior to last season, he played in a limited capacity in 2023 before suffering his UCL injury, for which his recovery extended into 2024.

Tuttle was finally cleared for game action for Michigan’s game against Washington this season and relieved junior quarterback Alex Orji in the second quarter. Initially, he provided a spark for the Wolverines’ offense before turnovers marred his performance. He was named the starter for Michigan’s next game against Illinois and made his first and only start of the season. Once again, he struggled with turnovers and couldn’t lead the Wolverines to a win.

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore seemed inclined to stick with Tuttle as his starter after the game against the Fighting Illini, but ultimately, Tuttle’s concussion put him back on the injury report for Michigan State. Thus, Tuttle’s Michigan and collegiate career will now end with a game and a half played this season as he chooses to step away from the sport and prioritize his health.
