Go hunting for bees in today’s puzzle! 🐝
SUNDAY PUZZLE — Hello solvers! I’m very excited to be back so soon to kick off our fall Sunday puzzles! You may notice we have some new editors for our puzzles, I’m looking forward to the great puzzles they’ll be editing (and for my life to be easier). I’ve been stewing this theme idea in my head for about a year now, so I’m glad I finally found a way to make it work. If you spot any errors or have comments on this puzzle, you can reach me at vschmitt@umich.edu. For general questions and concerns, reach out to crosswords@umich.edu. Happy solving!
Tricky Clues:
63A. The “Default font when opening a document, often” in question is ARIAL. I’m actually typing in Arial right now in my draft document, although I think it’ll have changed by the time you read this.
65A. “Mars’ partner in the group Silk Sonic” would be PAAK, half of the music group Silk Sonic. I loved their album “An Evening with Silk Sonic,” but I’m not sure if they’re ever going to make another one. I have to watch them in Vegas!
3D. ISLE Royale is the “national park in Lake Superior” referred to in this clue. If you’re a Michigander, you may remember learning about the wolves of ISLE Royale in grade school. The wolf population dropped to two wolves in 2016! As of 2024, however, there are approximately 30 wolves now!
6D. “Cartoonist Goldberg, namesake for whimsical machines” is RUBE, after which RUBE Goldberg machines were named! I always loved those creative machines, but never realized the author was a cartoonist until I first came across the name in a crossword.
36D. “Water, chemically speaking” is H2O, hope this clue didn’t cause you too much trouble! I believe this marks the first ever number appearing in a Michigan Daily crossword.
50D. The “Poe story” in this clue is “The CASK of Amontillado,” which is a grim tale about revenge. Montresor takes lethal revenge against his friend, Fortunato, who he believes has insulted him. Montresor invites him to his family catacombs to sample Amontillado, where he is trapped and entombed by Montresor. Don’t mess with this guy!
Today’s Theme:
This puzzle’s theme is a simple one: B2B, “Slang for inter-company transaction, or a phonetic hint to this puzzle’s starred clues”. Looking at some of our starred clues we have BEELZEBUB, BUG BOMB, and BARTAB… noticing a pattern? All of the starred clues start and end with a ‘B’, and now B2B make more sense. The rest of our starred clues solve to: BAOBAB, BATHTUB, BILLY CLUB, BOOB, BYOB, BOB, and BRB. Have a good start to your week!
