Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers will face off in November for one of the most high profile Senate races in the 2024 election cycle, aiming to secure the seat left open by the retirement of Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
The Associated Press called both races at 9 p.m. as Slotkin expectedly emerged as the winner of the Democratic primary, defeating her challenger, actor and lawyer Hill Harper. Rogers, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, won the Republican primary, defeating former Rep. Justin Amash and physician Sherry O’Donnell.
Despite former Republican candidate Sandy Pensler’s withdrawal and endorsement of Rogers, Pensler’s name remained on the ballot due to the timing of his withdrawal. With Michigan’s status as a key presidential swing state, the race will be closely watched as it is one of about half a dozen open seats with the potential to decide the control of the Senate come November.
Slotkin has been a formidable fundraiser throughout the Senate race. According to the campaign finance report, Slotkin accumulated more than $22.3 million and had nearly $9.6 million in cash reserves as of June 30. In early June, Slotkin spent $8 million on an ad buy in the final weeks leading up to the general election in Michigan. TV ad reservations are targeted between October and November, specifically in the Detroit, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Flint media markets across broadcast, cable and digital platforms.
According to recent polls, Slotkin currently has a 6.4 point lead over Rogers.
