Comet Coffee

The Vibe: Quaint, cultured, continental

About Comet Coffee:

When enjoying coffee, the environs in which we drink are as important as the quality of that drink. A favorite among campus professors and students, Comet Coffee knows this well. With the atmosphere of a classic continental cafe and its convenient — yet somewhat secluded — location, Comet Coffee is a must-try for any student or Ann Arborite who hasn’t been yet. Readers, couples of every age, professors and students fueled by their doppios are all common sightings. It’s both aesthetically coherent, with pleasantly colored cups and saucers for each drink, and offers some of the highest quality coffee in town. If Wes Anderson came to Ann Arbor, we know where he’d get his coffee.

What we think of the coffee:

An extremely wide variety of teas, coffees and other drinks; hot, cold and all degrees of caffeinated are available to patrons. Pour-overs and cortados alike are consistently perfectly brewed; Comet Coffee is everything one would expect from a cafe, with competitive pricing to other Ann Arbor cafes. Comet Coffee also houses a small patisserie selection, though savory goods are often available due to frequent menu rotations. The coffee is strong and the bean varieties are well curated by the cafe — and, in addition to range, the quality explains the pleasant bustle often found inside.

Recommended: Cortado, Ethiopian pour-over, Earl Grey Tea

What we think of the space

Located midway through Nickel’s Arcade in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, the outdoor seating of Comet Coffee is sure to please spring and summer patrons, allowing for both fresh air and sunlight without direct heat. Inside, the space is cozy without feeling cramped thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, cool and cheerful mint colored walls and tiled floors. Like in a continental cafe, it’s acceptable to share a table with a stranger if there is open space. The music selection is tasteful, digestible and doesn’t overshadow concentration or talk. The cafe is wonderful for working solo, but the expected volume level inside is conversational. Altogether, the quality of the patisserie, the coffee and the synergetic feeling of the conversations that overlap just barely — table to table — leave Comet Coffee a favorite of many and a cornerstone of Ann Arbor coffee culture.
