30 cars damaged in Palmer Commons Parking Structure flooding

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

30 cars were damaged as Palmer Commons Parking Structure experienced significant flooding Wednesday morning. The heavy, tropical rainfall which caused the flooding is associated with Hurricane Beryl, a storm that has killed at least seven people and left millions of Texans without power.

Melissa Overton, Deputy Chief of Police, wrote in a statement to The Michigan Daily that the several feet water in the lower level of the structure left it without power. No injuries were reported at the scene.

“We were notified about the flooding today around 11:40 a.m,” Overton wrote. “There was several feet of water in the lower level of the structure caused by heavy rain. There are approximately 30 vehicles that may have been damaged. Individuals can contact DPSS at (734) 763-1131 for assistance or questions regarding their vehicle. The structure remains without power. It could take several hours for the water to subside. There were no injuries.“

In an email to The Daily, Dentistry student Angie Maher explained that the extent of the damages to her car will require her to seek alternative transportation to campus.

“I haven’t been able to access my car yet to check if it still works and to grab any of my stuff, but I’m assuming it’s totaled.” Maher wrote. “The water was up to the top of my wheel wells when I checked it at 11:15AM, and the car alarm was going off. I now have to look for a new car and get rides to school in the meantime, since I’m currently living at home 30 minutes from campus. I don’t feel adequately supported at this time because I don’t know where my car is or when I will be able to access it or how much money I will have to pay for repairs/a new car, and I don’t have a reliable way of getting to school without my car.”
