Ohio State’s Gavin DeVooght commits to Michigan

With offseason recruiting in full swing, Michigan baseball coach Tracy Smith adds right-hander Gavin DeVooght from Ohio State to the Wolverines’ bullpen.

DeVooght announced his commitment Thursday on X to join Michigan after his breakout freshman season with the Buckeyes. DeVooght is just one of a few Ohio State players moving on to new opportunities, as the Buckeyes experience immense upheaval as former head coach Bill Mosiello left the program in early June after just two seasons.

This year was truly a coming out party for DeVooght who finished the season earning Big Ten All-Freshman team honors. DeVooght appeared in 18 games for 44.1 innings and became a consistent reliever from the Ohio State bullpen as the season progressed and made the trek to Omaha, Neb, for the Big Ten Tournament where he threw against No. 2 seed Indiana.

The Walled Lake, Mich, native returns to Michigan and will continue his collegiate career with familial roots nearby. This year when the Buckeyes took on the Wolverines at home, DeVooght garnered a large crowd of supporting friends and family who are likely to frequent Ray Fisher stadium in the coming season.

DeVooght joins a class bursting with potential on the mound with currently ten pitchers a part of the rising sophomore class. However, many of the arms remain untested and Smith continues to search for a standout in the group.

As Michigan continues to look for consistency on the mound, DeVooght provides a resilience that will be necessary as the unit continues to evolve. DeVooght comes to the Wolverines with extensive relieving experience which will prove integral within a group that may use upwards of five arms in a matchup. Further, Michigan lost its most consistent reliever in fifth-year left-hander Jacob Denner which leaves an opportunity for DeVooght to provide a much-needed dependable presence in the bullpen.

DeVooght marks the fourth transfer to join the Wolverines this offseason and with each addition Smith’s vision becomes ever more clear. As Smith continues to build his program, each new face has the opportunity to be the spark that Smith is looking for.
