Michael Hage selected No. 21 overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the NHL Draft

LAS VEGAS — Prior to today, the Michigan hockey team led the NCAA in all-time first-round selections at the NHL Draft with 33 players.

Today, the Wolverines not only maintain their record but also increase it to 34, thanks to forward Michael Hage.

As a star in the USHL playing for the Chicago Steel, Hage’s expectations have been high leading up to this moment. And Montreal) took advantage, using the No. 21 draft pick to snag Hage.

With the Steel, Hage tallied 85 total points, 75 of which came from his second season in the Chicago sweater. Many NHL teams have had questions about Hage, due to a season hit with injuries and inconsistencies. However, his stats speak for themselves, and with 75 points in one season, he was bound to be a first-round pick.

Announcing his commitment to the University of Michigan in 2022, Hage’s skill and hockey IQ are in line with what Wolverine coach Brandon Naurato typically looks for in a player. And with a long line of Michigan and Steel alumni before him — Owen Power, Adam Fantilli and Mackie Samoskevich, to name a few — Hage is in good hands at Michigan.

While there may have been question marks around Hage’s name for many teams leading up to the NHL Draft, one thing is for sure — the Canadiens decided Hage was the answer.
