Calgary Flames select Matvei Gridin at No. 28 overall in the first round of the NHL Draft

LAS VEGAS — While the Michigan hockey team was only expecting one of its commits to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames had a different idea.

With the 28th overall pick in the NHL Draft, Calgary selected Russian forward Matvei Gridin.

An alum of the Muskegon Lumberjacks, Gridin is one of the first Lumberjack players to be drafted directly out of his juniors career — and for good reason.

With Muskegon, Gridin tallied 83 points in one season. With a high hockey IQ and strong play without the puck, Gridin is an intelligent player. While not necessarily expected to be drafted in the first round, Gridin will be an asset to Calgary.

Although a surprise first-round pick, Gridin adds to the long list of Wolverine commits drafted in the first round, following No. 21 pick Michael Hage.
