Potential human remains found at UMich construction site

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Construction workers uncovered potential human remains on the University of Michigan campus Monday afternoon. Michigan State Police responded to the incident at South Fifth Avenue and John Street around 3 p.m and continued to investigate until 11:30 p.m.

The U-M Division of Public Safety and Security asked for the state police to examine the potential remains at a forensics lab. Rene Gonzalez, a public information officer for the Michigan State Police, told MLive the age of the substances are currently unknown.

In an email to The Michigan Daily, Melissa Overton, deputy chief of police for DPSS, wrote that construction has resumed at the site and there are no updates at this time.

“On June 17, 2024, construction workers discovered what appeared to be human remains (bones) while excavating at a site located at S. Fifth Avenue and John Street.” Overton wrote. “UMPD worked with the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and local experts on the case.”
