Coming off of a year in which he earned Second Team Freshman All-American honors, First Team Freshman All-Big Ten honors and broke Michigan baseball’s freshman home run record, first baseman Collin Priest made his name known on the national level.
Priest is poised to take advantage of his newfound notoriety by entering the transfer portal, first reported by Noah Bieniek on X.
The freshman was relegated to a bench role for the early portion of the Wolverines’ season, starting just 40 of the 60 games during the season. But in time, Priest blossomed into a slugger that Michigan coach Tracy Smith couldn’t keep out of the lineup. Slashing .279/.445/.578 — good for a 1.023 OPS — Priest proved to be one of the most powerful hitters in the entire Big Ten while demonstrating elite patience as a young hitter.
Priest is one of the first Wolverines in 2024 to enter the transfer portal, as the team had remained largely intact until this point in the offseason. But with postseason play soon wrapping up, the transfer-portal market will begin to heat up.
The slugger was the crown jewel of a large freshman class this past season and projected to play a large role in Michigan’s seasons to come. But if Priest follows through and leaves Ann Arbor, the Wolverines have a gap in the middle of their lineup that must be filled.
