Though the Michigan baseball team’s season ended just over a week ago, the work isn’t done for Wolverines coach Tracy Smith.
Hitting the ground running in the transfer portal, Smith and Michigan landed its first transfer this offseason: utility player Colby Turner. Turner announced his commitment Monday on X.
In his freshman season at San Diego State, Turner burst onto the scene immediately. He was among the Aztecs’ best hitters at the plate, compiling a .361 batting average and .417 on-base percentage in 122 at-bats. A pure contact hitter, he figures to provide the Wolverines with much-needed consistency in the batter’s box.
As a utility player, Turner was called upon to play in numerous positions, including as a third baseman and as a designated hitter.
Turner’s efforts earned five separate Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors, a mark that led the conference.
With three years of eligibility remaining, Turner could be an important piece to a young Michigan roster. With several experienced hitters such as Mack Timbrook and Kyle Dernedde departing Ann Arbor, Turner fills an important gap in the lineup. Additionally, Turner comes with some familiarity to Michigan’s roster, joining former high school teammate Bradley Navarro as a Wolverine.
And despite the nascent offseason, Michigan has already secured its first transfer. With an entire summer ahead, Turner could be the first of many new faces to don the maize and blue.
