The Michigan women’s basketball team has made few moves in the offseason, both with players and the coaching staff. The Wolverines only added Ally VanTimmeren through the transfer portal in April after multiple players exited the program earlier in the month.
But on Tuesday, the Wolverines announced that the coaching staff will add Justine Raterman as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season. Raterman will join other assistant coaches Jillian Dunston and Melanie Moore, as well as assistant coach for player development Ariel Atkins.
“Justine is a perfect fit for Michigan women’s basketball and everything we stand for,” Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico said in a statement. “She is a proven winner, both during her playing days and as a coach. I know that her energy, strong ties in the Midwest, her ability to build relationships and how she approaches the game will help our program. … I know that Justine will make an immediate positive impact on our players, both on and off the court.”
As a player, Raterman was a four-time All-Atlantic 10 selection for Dayton where she spent her entire career. She finished fifth all-time in both career points and rebounds as she led the Flyers to three NCAA Tournament appearances in her four seasons.
Raterman first started coaching at Miami (OH) in 2017, where she was a director of video operations and then an assistant coach in her two seasons with the Red Hawks. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Marquette in 2019 and promoted to associate head coach before last season. During her five seasons with the Golden Eagles, she helped the program reach the NCAA Tournament three times and WNIT once.
Now as an assistant coach for the Wolverines, with former assistant coach Harry Rafferty not listed on Michigan’s website, Raterman will join the Wolverines’ program that is set to look much different than it did last season.
“I am honored to join the Michigan women’s basketball program,” Raterman said in a statement. “Coach (Barnes) Arico has built one of the best programs in the nation with unbelievable student-athletes and consistent success on and off the court. She is a winner and developer of women. I am thrilled to be a part of the success and pursuit to hang banners and cannot wait to help continue to build this program.”
Michigan has had an offseason full of movement, but one without many additions to the roster or coaching staff. The second offseason addition to the program, coach or player, Raterman will also add a new perspective to a coaching staff that already has many ties to Michigan.
